First Kiss is the first episode of Lizzie McGuire's second season, and the thirty-second episode overall.
Summary[]
Lizzie's first boyfriend is the neighborhood paper boy, and all her thoughts are devoted exclusively to him, shutting out even Miranda and Gordo, causing Gordo to confront his feelings for Lizzie. Meanwhile, Matt becomes a virtual slave to Melina, in an effort to acquire a rare baseball card and complete his collection.
Synopsis[]
Valentine's Day is approaching and Lizzie and Miranda notice that the love bug has bitten everyone in school except Gordo and themselves. At home Lizzie is talking to Miranda on the phone when the McGuire's paperboy Ronny Jacobs comes to the door to collect. She accuses him of eavesdropping on her; he accuses her of being rude to him. She follows him outside to argue, but it's obvious that there is a big attraction between the two. The next day she tells Miranda she likes a boy. Miranda is shocked to hear that it's Ronny, not Ethan, and immediately tells Gordo. The next morning Lizzie rushes out to get the paper—because there's a note from Ronny inside it. At school Lizzie is in full crush mode, talking endlessly about Ronny to Miranda, then Gordo. Miranda thinks Gordo is jealous of Ronny, but he denies it. Later Lizzie and Ronny are having a good time skating together. He asks if she considers themselves boyfriend and girlfriend. Both of them are afraid to say it, but Ronny finally does and gives her a ring. It's a romantic moment, and they share a kiss. In the background, a stunned Gordo watches.
Lizzie comes home practically walking on air. When Sam and Jo find out about Lizzie's new love, Sam is worried, but Jo thinks it's nice—until she sees the ring, then she's concerned too. Miranda tells Lizzie that she's losing her mind over this boy. Lizzie blurts out that Miranda is just jealous because she doesn't have her own boyfriend. Miranda is hurt by this, and their friendship seems threatened. But there's trouble with Ronny. The next time he sees Lizzie, he tells her there's a girl at his school that he likes, and he doesn't know if now is the right time for him and Lizzie to be boyfriend and girlfriend. He offers to let her keep the ring, but she tearfully gives it back. In the library, Lizzie is still upset and crying when Gordo finds her. She pours out her heart to him and he does his best to console her. Gordo seems on the verge of saying something else to Lizzie, something big, but he stops short. He and Lizzie leave the library arm-in-arm with Miranda. All are friends again.
Meanwhile, with Matt[]
Meanwhile, Matt needs just one more baseball card to complete his collection, but can't find it anywhere. Melina reveals that she has the rare card, and she's willing to give up the card for a price—a BIG price. Matt has to do everything she asks for a couple of days, and even after he's completed his Herculean tasks, she still demands "one more thing." Later, at home, Sam admires the way his son chased down the one missing card he needed, but he's not happy when he finds out the "one thing" that Melina wanted was Sam's own beloved baseball card collection. In return, Sam confiscates Matt's collection.

- In some Asian locations (such as Singapore), the kiss between Lizzie and Ronny was edited out of the broadcast because some Asian nations have very strict censorship laws and practices.

- Since late Season 1, Animated Lizzie gets another redesign that is used in most of Season 2.
- The scene with Lizzie's telephone conversation with Ronny is included in an episode of How I Met Your Father, also starring Hilary Duff.

Quotes[]
Animated Lizzie: School is actually a reality game show. People get voted out, and just when you think you have the rules figured out, they change.
Gordo: Everyone's paired off. It's like Noah's Ark with fluorescent lighting.
Lizzie: I think I like someone.
Miranda: Lizzie, everyone knows about your crush on Ethan Craft. Except maybe Ethan Craft.
Lizzie: Pudding? That's a great nickname!
Miranda: Do you believe her? It's like watching one of those hygiene films they show in health class.
Miranda: Wait. Wait. Are you jealous?
Gordo: Jealous? Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Wrong road. I was trying to identify a different emotion. Not jealousy.
Miranda: Right.
Gordo: I think.
Ronny: I told my friends you were my girlfriend. Is—is that okay?
Animated Lizzie: ♩ Hallelujah! ♩
Lizzie: Yes.
Jo: Lizzie? You okay?
Lizzie: Oh, everything is absolutely positively completely and totally perfect!
Sam: I don't like the sound of that.
Jo: So you had a good time with Ronny?
Lizzie: Oh, only the best. The most awesome time in my entire life.
Sam: Okay, really don't like the sound of that.
Jo: The number one way to make a boy even more appealing to a girl is to tell her she can't see him.
Sam: I'm not prepared to use reverse psychology here. I don't even understand regular psychology.
Animated Lizzie: And in the category of Most Embarrassing Moment of My Life, we have a winner.
Ronny: We need to talk.
Jo: He just said, "We need to talk." Those are the four most horrible words in the English language. Nothing good ever follows "we need to talk."
Lizzie: She's probably prettier than me, and she's probably smarter than me, and she's probably a lot more fun than I am.
Gordo: No, she's not.
Lizzie: How do you know?
Gordo: Because there's nobody prettier than you, or more fun to be with.
Lizzie: You forgot smarter.
Gordo: Yeah, well, I was including myself in that one.
Pop Culture[]
Matt must perform twelve tasks for Melina in order to receive the final baseball card. This is a possible riff on the mythological Twelve Labors of Hercules.[1]
Lizzie: Okay. I'll only tell you if you agree to the Cone of Silence.
- The Cone of Silence is a device used by the spy agency CONTROL in the 1960's spy spoof situation comedy Get Smart.[2] It is worth noting that the Cone of Silence never worked properly, just as it fails in this episode.
Matt: Paul O'Neill, Paul O'Neill, please let there be a Paul O'Neill.
- Paul O'Neill is a former major league baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees.[3]
